-
- Hello everyone:
- I recently obtained by FTP the instructions for making a 2m
- J-Pole antenna from 300 ohm cable. It said that this ant should also work
- on 70 cm. Does anyone have experience doing this? or is it much better to
- make a J-Pole specially for 70 cm?
- Thanks in advance for your comments.

-
- 1) wear comfortable clothes - especially shoes and socks.. you will
- be on your feet a lot if you want to browse the whole flea market.
-
- 2) travel light...don't buy anything you won't want to carry around
- with you if you won't want to go right back to the hotel room
- right away with it...
-
- 3) consider a backpack or over the shoulder bag if you plan to pick up
- lots of literature (gets heavy) or small parts and equipment.
- throw in a mechanical pencil or a pen and a small notebook so you
- can take notes and record where you saw something so you can find
- it again later if need be.
-
- 4) if doing 3, consider including a lunch and maybe a thermos of
- favorite drink or beverage (calamari or squid, pasta or noodles,
- marinara or red sauce...egad they're all the same! this cuts the
- menu in half!)...avoid the lines at the food counters (at smaller
- shows this also usually avoids what is unfortunately lousy food).
-
- 5) if you're not in a group, you might want to leave the radio home.
- or locked up in the car.
-
- it's something else to drag along...and in the RF Fields of
- Biblical Proportions that happen at Dayton, a lot of radios aren't
- all that useful...there is no unused channel there, it would seem.
-
- 6) It's ok to take rest breaks. If possible don't go where the crowd
- goes (similar rules for Disney World apply).
-
- 7) if you can, stick around for the clean up drawings on Sunday.
-
- that's a start. if you are looking for used gear we get into things like
- bringing a portable VOM and checking DC continuity of switches and making sure
- that controls actually adjust something and all that...

- Stop at the AMSAT booth.
-
- In general, go to everything EARLY!! Parking is normally a b**ch
- and to make it worse, there's a lot of highway repair projects
- underway now.
-
- Don't waste time carrying an HT. Everything below 23 cm will be
- wall-to-wall QRM. On 2m average HT range is about 3 feet. :-)

- Bill - I posted this a couple of months ago. This is the last I've seen in the
- local paper.
- This was the lead article in Tom Blair's column in the February 17,
- 1994 edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
-
- "In a new bit of tension between the Board of Supervisors and Sheriff
- Jim Roache, the board refused Tuesday to accept a gift to the Sheriff's Dept.
- and told the sheriff to return it. The gift: a portable ham radio used last
- August by a back-country bicyclist, Chris Boyer, to summon help for a
- seriously injured friend. After sheriff's deputies responded to the
- emergency call, they told Boyer he had violated FCC rules by using restricted
- emergency frequencies and ordered him to surrender the improperly altered
- radio to them and the FCC. To avoid further hassle, Boyer signed the radio
- over to the department as a gift. But the supervisors, who honored Boyer in
- December as a good Samaritan, said no thanks this week. They urged the
- sheriff to return the radio to Boyer."
